Kinja'd!!!

Two new Dell U2415s arrived today. They look pretty sharp (even Ultrasharp?). I do wish there was more out there in terms of 16:10 4k screens though (these are 1920x1200).

This means I can now browse Oppo and everything fits on my portrait screens (my old 1680x1050 screens didn’t quite fit it unless I zoomed out).

They do point out how bad the backlight on the 30"er is these days, but I’ve got a little something coming tomorrow to deal with that (for definitions of little that include 43", and no I’m not sure it will actually fit on my desk or under my ceiling)

In any event, so far so good (and so many USB ports, each of these guys has a 5 port USB hub).

Update: The 43"er is unusable. It has some appalling dithering thing going going on. Look at this crap:

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t mean Edge, though it is sort of crap as well

That’s a little zoomed in, but not far from real size. Whatever is going on there might be acceptable on a high-DPI display, but at 43", it’s painfully apparent on any image or solid colors other than white (text looked ok). I had to stand like 12' away to not have things look weird, which is clearly not ok for something sold as a monitor (even a gaming monitor) This is seriously the worst looking screen I’ve seen since 2000. In any event, it’s boxed up and going back. Now I’ve got to figure out what to do about my middle screen, I worry that other 43"ers will have more or less the same panels and the same dithering, but I’ll guess I’ll read some reviews. Worst case I can buy Dell’s current 2560x1600 30"er, but I’d rather have screens that were better matches size wise.

I have a glorious old 30” Apple Cinema Display on my desk. Still looks pretty good but I fear it’s getting a little weak. I don’t know what the resolution is SO MUCH SCREEN REAL ESTATE. A 1080p video at 100% only takes up one corner.

Also yes I also  greatly prefer 16:10

The 43"er will be 16:9, but I figure who cares, it will have plenty of vertical real estate. For the portraits though I thought 16:10 was a must, going from 1050px to 1080px would be a very weak upgrade, and even if I got something higher res, it would still probably be narrower than my old screens. In a prefect world, I’d be looking at something like a 34 " 3840x2400 and two 21" 2400x1500 displays, but sadly neither exist (no anything close) , so this seemed like the best way to do things.

At home I have an Alienware 34" Ultrawide, but at work I have the 38" ultrawide with 3840 x 1600.  So nice.

I have dual monitors and recently switched on to por tr ait. I’m not going back to dual landscape.

I love having the portrait screens. It was a revelation when I first tried it with my old ones. They are so convenient for a lot of tasks, though I still like having landscape in the center for certain things.

If I were doing lots and lots of word processing, a portrait screen would be a must. I could see having side-by-side portraits for everyday use, though. 90-percent of what I do nowadays is on the Internet, and there’s no reason to have a browser full-screen in landscape, unless watching video. And I don’t do much of that.

I saw your post last night and I caused me to go take a look at amazon, it looks like there are some serious options in that size range if you can deal with price tag that comes with some of the brands.

Most of the ones I saw were 32:9 or something along those lines with a price tag of around $1000 depending on the brand and features you wanted.

The ultrawides tend to be lower resolution than I want (they are 1440 or even 1080px vertical). This Philips was $900 so I am clearly willing to spend a lot of money (to be fair, I’ve never regretted the ~$800 I spent on my 3007WFP-HC or the ~$500 each on my 2005FPW monitors cost in 2005). I think right now my options are:

Wait for the Acer/Asus 43" freesync displays to be released and reviewed . That should be soon, but they are likely to be more expensive (Acer has announced a $1,299 MSRP). They are both also VA panels, so they might have the same dithering issue.

Buy a 43" 4K IPS monitor (probably the Dell). These are a bit cheaper but lack Freesync, and generally HDR support.

Buy something else. As I said I could just get Dell’s current 30"er, though that’s more than their 43"er at present.

Buy nothing, and hope that more people offer big freesync compatible displays in the future.

So would one like this one or smaller work or is it more a resolution thing?

Yeah that would be no go based on the resolution. I current 1600px of vertical resolution on my main screen (and 1920px on the new ones), going down to 1080 would be a real disappointment (and the smallest vertical resolution I’d have used since I replaced my 17" 1280x1024 with a 19" 1600x1200 CRT in 2002). Even the 3840px horizontal resolution is only what you get on a normal 4k screen.

I think the list of things I’m considering now is basically this: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100160979%20601205242%20601305587%20600030623%20600338098%20601318768

Ah yes I looked and my 30” ACD is also 2560x1600 which is pretty darn nice. When first introduced in 2005 or so they were like $5000. Only top of the line Power Macs of the time could even drive them.

Also I love this LG ad:

Yeah, I got my current 30" display in 2008, and it was not cheap, though I did get a good deal on it. And certainly it’s really only been since I got my Geforce 1070 that I could actually play most games at 2560x1600. Unfortunately as you can see in the picture, the backlight’s not doing well, and I think 11 years is a pretty good run.

43 43 inch sounds like way too much for a desktop monitor. My 27 inch makes my head swivel around a bit even. is it going to be hanging on the wall or something?

Maybe? Need to see how I feel about it. In the short time I had the Philips one, my impression was that (sitting towards the back of my desk) it was a little uncomfortable for full-sized browser windows, but fine for half windows. I should have tried it with some games I guess, but given the way things are placed I doubt it would be a huge issue. Regardless, I didn’t feel like the size was a significant issue. There’s no question that it would probably be better to have something the same height but in 16:10 rather than 16:9.

I’ve been using a 30" (16:10) monitor since 2008, and I’ve never found that too big at all .
